
Introduction
UMUX, the Usability Metric for User Experience, is a short standardized questionnaire for measuring perceived usability: four items in the original version, two in the widely used UMUX-Lite, designed to produce scores that track the ten-item System Usability Scale at a fraction of the length. It exists because researchers needed a usability measure short enough to drop into any survey or study without exhausting respondents, and it has become a standard where brevity matters. This article covers what UMUX and UMUX-Lite measure, how they relate to the SUS, how to score them, and when the short instrument is the right choice.
What is UMUX?
UMUX is a standardized questionnaire that measures users' perceived usability of a system with a small number of items rated on a seven-point agreement scale. The original four-item version, published by Kraig Finstad in 2010, was designed around the ISO definition of usability (effectiveness, efficiency, satisfaction) and built to correlate with the System Usability Scale while being far shorter. UMUX-Lite, introduced by James Lewis and colleagues in 2013, reduced it to two positively worded items, one about capability ("this system's capabilities meet my requirements") and one about ease ("this system is easy to use"), and showed that the two-item score, with a simple regression adjustment, closely tracks SUS scores. The instruments belong to the psychometric tradition of standardized UX measurement: validated, comparable across products and studies, and interpretable against published norms.
UMUX-Lite and the SUS
The SUS is the most established perceived-usability instrument, with decades of norms, and its ten items take a minute or two. UMUX-Lite takes seconds. The research behind UMUX-Lite established that its scores correlate strongly with SUS scores from the same participants, and a published regression formula maps UMUX-Lite onto the SUS scale so that results can be read against SUS norms. The two items also map onto the two most influential ideas in technology acceptance research, perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use, which gives the short instrument a theoretical footing as well as an empirical one. The practical upshot: where a full SUS is too long (in-product surveys, benchmarks with many products, studies where usability is one of several constructs), UMUX-Lite delivers a comparable score at almost no cost in respondent attention.
Scoring and Interpreting
1. Use the seven-point agreement scale as published.
The items and scale are the instrument; changing the wording or the points breaks the link to the norms, the comparability rule that governs all standardized measures.
2. Convert to a 0-100 scale.
Each item's response is rescaled so the total runs from 0 to 100, in the same range as the SUS; the published scoring procedure specifies the arithmetic.
3. Map to SUS norms where comparison is the goal.
The regression adjustment lets a UMUX-Lite mean be read against SUS benchmarks (the SUS average near 68, the percentile and grade scales), with the understanding that it is an estimate.
4. Report with sample size and interval.
A two-item mean from twelve participants carries wide uncertainty; the interval belongs beside the score, as with every small-sample metric.
5. Track consistently.
A fixed instrument on a fixed cadence makes UMUX-Lite a workable tracking measure, and its brevity makes frequent waves practical.
When to Use It
UMUX-Lite is the right choice when perceived usability needs measuring and length is constrained: in-product micro-surveys, multi-product benchmarks, mixed studies where a usability item sits beside tasks and other questions (a Ballpark study can attach the two items to any task block), and tracking programs run often. The full SUS remains preferable when usability is the central construct, the sample is small, and the richer diagnostic information of ten items is worth the time. Neither measures actual task performance; both are self-report, to be paired with task success, time, and observed behavior.
The Bottom Line
UMUX and UMUX-Lite measure perceived usability in four or two items, on a validated scale that tracks the SUS and reads against its norms. Use the published wording and scale, convert to 0-100, map to SUS benchmarks when comparing, report the uncertainty, and keep the instrument fixed for tracking. Where a minute of respondent attention is too much to ask, two items that measure what ten would is a good deal.
