Introduction
The cheapest research is the research someone already did. Secondary research, desk research in the trade, is the systematic use of existing evidence: published studies, industry reports, government data, competitor materials, and your own organisation's forgotten archives. Done first, it scopes every question and shrinks every study; skipped, it guarantees the expensive rediscovery of the known. This article covers the sources, the craft of evaluating borrowed evidence, and why the research nobody budgets for is the highest-ROI hour in the process.
What is Secondary Research?
Secondary research is the collection and analysis of data and findings that already exist, produced by others (or by your own organisation, previously) for purposes that may differ from yours: academic literature, industry and analyst reports, government statistics, published benchmarks, competitor communications, community discussions, and the internal archive of past studies, support tickets, and analytics. Its counterpart, primary research, collects original data; the secondary researcher's craft is different: finding, evaluating, and synthesising evidence gathered by hands they didn't control, for questions adjacent to their own. The adjacency is the permanent condition, and managing it (knowing exactly how someone else's question differs from yours) is most of the skill.
The Source Landscape
External and rigorous: peer-reviewed literature, government and statistical-agency data, and methodologically transparent survey organisations, the tier where methods are documented and biases discussed. External and interested: industry reports, vendor benchmarks, and analyst publications, often current and rich, always shaped by who paid; the reading rule is to find the methodology page first and the sponsor second. External and raw: forums, reviews, and community threads, unfiltered voice-of-market material best treated as qualitative data for proper analysis rather than as findings. Internal: the most undervalued shelf: past research reports, old study recordings, support and sales conversations, and analytics, your organisation's own primary data waiting to be secondary-analysed against a new question, which is what research repositories and knowledge management exist to make possible.
Evaluating Borrowed Evidence
1. Reconstruct the original question.
Every dataset answers its own study's question; the gap between theirs and yours is where misuse lives. A satisfaction benchmark from enterprise buyers transfers poorly to your SMB base, however glossy the chart.
2. Audit the method like it were yours.
Who was sampled, how (frame and response both), what was asked, when? Findings inherit their collection's flaws invisibly; a source that won't show its method is asserting, not evidencing.
3. Date-stamp everything.
Markets, behaviours, and baselines drift; pre-shift data answers pre-shift questions. Recency is a validity dimension, not a nicety.
4. Triangulate across independent sources.
Convergence between sources with different sponsors and methods is the desk researcher's version of triangulation; a "fact" that traces back through five citations to one press release is one source wearing a crowd costume.
The Sequencing Role
Secondary research's highest calling is going first. Before any primary study: what's already known, what baselines exist, what vocabularies and segments have others found, where do sources conflict? The output is a sharper brief: primary research designed against the genuine gaps, smaller and better-aimed for it, the exploration phase's cheapest instrument. The failure modes are symmetric: teams that never desk-research rediscover the known at field prices, and teams that only desk-research inherit everyone else's questions and nobody's answers about their own users, which is the moment to graduate to primary work.
The Benefits
Secondary research is fast and cheap relative to everything it prevents: mis-scoped studies, reinvented instruments, questions already answered. It supplies context and baselines primary work can't generate about itself, reaches populations and history you could never sample, and turns the internal archive from storage cost into compounding asset.
The Limitations
The data was never quite for your question, its quality ceiling was set by hands you didn't control, and its currency decays. Availability bias haunts it (what got published is not what's true, merely what's findable), interested sources outnumber disinterested ones, and it can answer nothing genuinely novel about your specific users, which is precisely the territory competitive advantage lives in. Desk work frames the question; it rarely settles it.
The Takeaway
Secondary research is standing on the record before adding to it: mine the external tiers with their interests in view, mine your own archive like the primary data it is, audit every borrowed method, date-stamp every borrowed fact, and let the gaps you find write the brief for the primary work that follows. An hour at the desk routinely saves a month in the field, and the only unforgivable finding is the one someone had already filed.
